Call For COP27 Presidency to Have Sustainable Catering at the Global Climate Event

A letter by UNFCCC (United Framework Convention on Climate Change) Action Group

Vienna, 15 September 2022 – A letter written by UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Action Group and signed by FOUR PAWS, the global animal welfare organisation, to the United Nations COP27 Presidency has asked them to ensure that sustainable food is provided throughout the event in November.

FOUR PAWS, who will be co-hosting the first ever pavilion dedicated to food system change, called on the Egyptian Presidency to “to ensure that nutritious, locally sourced and sustainable plant-based foods are a leading feature on the catering menu at this year's COP27 across all conference venues.”

The letter was signed by 165 global civil society groups.

"We welcome the Egyptian Presidency for including an Adaptation and Agriculture Day in this year’s programme at COP, but we must see more done to address food systems as a whole to address the climate crisis.

The world must undergo a just transformation toward sustainable food systems if it is to meet its global climate change mitigation goals. Plant-based meat and dairy substitutes offer viable replacements for animal-sourced foods in high- and middle-income settings as well as a path for changing to more sustainable diets.

Without the farming and agricultural sector doing its share to combat climate change, it will be impossible to keep the commitment to the Paris Climate Accord which sets out to make sure that global temperature limit increases to 1.5°C or well below 2°C.

It is now or never to tackle this issue. Reports show that the global demand for meat will double by 2050. We must change behavioural habits through legislation and education. Not only do animals suffer as a result of this industry, but the environment and in turn the global population. Therefore, at the leading global climate conference, we must set down a marker and we hope that the Egyptian Presidency will take the lead and Member States follow suit.”

COP27 Climate Change conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022 in Egypt, Sharm el-Sheikh.

United Nations: COP27 will bring governments together to accelerate global efforts to confront the climate crisis. It is an important meeting because the latest science shows that climate change is moving much faster than we are and is pushing ecosystems and communities to their limits. We need to urgently scale up efforts to adapt to a warming world and to implement climate solutions across all sectors to halve emissions by 2030.

United Nations: “The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in Paris, on 12 December 2015 and entered into force on 4 November 2016.”

For the first time ever, this year’s UN climate change conference - COP27 - will host pavilions dedicated to food system change, including the Food4Climate Pavilion organised by global food awareness NGO, ProVeg International, and 15 other partners from around the world including FOUR PAWS
