FOUR PAWS Responds to Earthquake Crisis in Venezuela

Following the devastating earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on 24 June, FOUR PAWS is preparing an emergency response to support animals affected by the disaster. 

The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, impacted almost the entire northern part of the country, causing significant loss of life, injuries, and widespread destruction. While large-scale humanitarian efforts have focused on helping people, animals have also suffered immensely and should not be overlooked. Many were killed or injured, while countless others were left frightened, displaced, and in urgent need of care. The full impact on animals remains unknown, because in a crisis like this, animals are not accounted for.

Local veterinarians and animal welfare organisations have mobilised, set up makeshift clinics and support centres, and are doing their best to treat injured and scared animals in this unimaginably difficult situation. 

A four-person FOUR PAWS emergency response team deployed to Bogotá, Colombia, on 12 July to coordinate support for animals affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela. Working alongside local and international responders in both Colombia, which serves as a logistical hub for some emergency operations and Venezuela, the team has been assessing the needs of animals and coordinating relief efforts.

Working closely with local stakeholders, the team has secured the procurement and transport of essential animal relief supplies for emergency clinics and shelters across Venezuela.

On 21 July, 7 tonnes of animal food was sent to several animal welfare organisations in La Guaira, one of the regions hardest hit by the earthquakes. The food will provide more than 1,400 rescued animals with enough nourishment for over a month.

FOUR PAWS continues to work with partners to assess evolving needs and determine where additional food and emergency supplies can provide further support.

The emergency response in Venezuela reflects FOUR PAWS' long-term commitment to ensuring animals are not overlooked during disasters. Beyond providing immediate relief, the organisation advocates for animal-inclusive disaster preparedness, response, and recovery planning, recognising that every earthquake, flood, or wildfire can have devastating consequences for animals.

As part of this commitment, FOUR PAWS works to ensure animals are included in national disaster management systems while supporting local animal welfare organisations in strengthening their emergency preparedness and response capacity. By building these partnerships before disasters strike, communities are better equipped to protect and care for animals when they need help most.
