Argentina Big Cat Rescue Mission
A new chapter for thirty big cats from former Zoo Luján
Thirty big cats from the former Zoo Luján in Argentina have started a new chapter in life after being relocated to species-appropriate sanctuaries by FOUR PAWS. Following years of living in inadequate conditions, the rescued lions and tigers now have the opportunity to enjoy professional care, spacious natural habitats and an environment where they can express more natural behaviours.
Fifteen of the rescued animals have found a new home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, while the remaining fifteen have been relocated to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. Although they have travelled to different destinations, every animal now has the chance to experience a life where their welfare comes first.
The animals relocated to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary were selected based on their health, welfare and medical needs. The FOUR PAWS sanctuary can provide the specialised care they require while allowing established social groups to remain together, helping to reduce stress and support their long-term wellbeing.
Among the rescued: Lionel and his three sons, Joe, Scar and Stanley
The four lions spent more than a decade together in a small concrete enclosure with limited space, little enrichment and few opportunities to display natural behaviours. Despite these conditions, they remained a close family group.
Each lion has his own story. Lionel is a calm older male, while Stanley has become the dominant male within the group and shares a particularly close bond with his father. Joe and Scar were declawed as cubs, a painful and unnecessary procedure that continues to affect their confidence and ability to interact naturally. Their experiences highlight the long-term impact that inadequate captive conditions can have on wild animals.
At LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, Lionel and his family now have access to spacious habitats designed to meet the needs of rescued big cats. Surrounded by nature and cared for by dedicated animal welfare experts, they can spend the rest of their lives in an environment that prioritises their wellbeing.
This rescue mission is another important step in FOUR PAWS' efforts to provide lasting solutions for big cats in need in Argentina and demonstrates what can be achieved through international collaboration in animal welfare.
