The Big Cat Policy Specialist role supports the Head of Wild Animals in Trade by building the policy that feeds into the international wild animals in trade campaigns, playing an active part in developing, implementing, and leading international campaigns that protect big cats from commercial trade. The Big Cat Policy Specialist will manage and deliver campaign policy activities and support international research and investigations, able to disseminate policy and provide policy guidelines for FOUR PAWS’ work.
The exciting new role will play a crucial part in supporting our wild animals in trade campaigns, helping to formulate strategies with policy and evidence to reach our campaign goals. This is an ideal opportunity for a specialist in campaign policy and research to play a key role in the fight for wild animals affected by trade.
Your contribution will be
- Planning, managing and delivering policy, research, and investigations work that feeds into our international campaigns that implement strategic organisational objectives and persuade target political stakeholders to implement changes for big cats affected by trade
- Conducting in-depth research to support campaigns and public affairs projects including submitting into Governmental and EU consultations, calls for evidence and working closely with the country offices to deliver local lobbying and advocacy objectives
- Leading on developing campaign policy strategies and helping to formulate budgets to deliver our campaigns
- Attending and representing at relevant wild animal trade events e.g. CITES and CBD conferences, and committee meetings
- Leading and facilitating internal meetings, support in managing campaign spending and support the Head Unit with budget management and reforecasting
- Monitoring relevant international, national animal welfare topics, and policy changes to stay on top of key welfare issues in relation to the trade of big cats and wild animals
- Being responsible for promoting a culture of evidence-led campaigning that will increase FOUR PAWS’ impact, influence, and profile, and will also support their colleagues to do the same
- Representing FOUR PAWS in media interviews and at external meetings, networking with key external stakeholders
- Developing strong internal working relationships across the global organisation and with external stakeholders, governments, and other NGOs etc.
- Leading the monitoring and evaluation of campaign lobby activities
- Assisting the Head of Unit with any other duties as and when required
Your profile ideally illustrates
- A relevant years of experience in campaigning with a passion for policy and research insights
- Being an effective change maker who has worked with theories of change and seen a campaign through to its success
- Decent background knowledge of the CITES institution and processes. Other UN institutions desirable such as CBD and UNEP
- Having strong communication skills and being fluent (written and oral) in English, with excellent writing, presentation and interpersonal skills and a confident public speaker, being able to communicate with the media
- Possess excellent project manager experience with skills and ability to work unsupervised within a small busy team and show leadership, prioritizing competing demands, who also has strong IT skills
- Being a strategist who knows how to develop strong and ambitious campaign strategies, oversee their implementation and using their own in-depth desk research, scientific data and commissioned work to formulate objective, well-reasoned arguments and messaging to elevate our campaigns
- Being able to work in a team and to bedetail-oriented, proactive and approachable, able to support their colleagues and be a role model for continuous improvement
- Inquisitive and ambitious, with a desire to constantly learn and develop their campaigning expertise further
- Able to travel domestically and internationally to provide support or participate in FOUR PAWS activities as required
- Great affinity to animal welfare and FOUR PAWS vision and mission
